A Complete Beginner Guide For Starting a Warlock in DnD

Dungeons and Dragons Warlock Featured

The magic users who cheat through Final exams are called Warlocks. They are a great class that has made a Pact with a powerful entity for a greater purpose. This could be their soul, the ability to influence events on the mortal plane for their Patron, or cookies. It’s fun to create a backstory about the Warlock before they make the Pact. This includes their motivations for making the Pact. Warlocks have a lot of character-building built into them.

Pacts And Patrons

With their 3 Pacts and 3 Patrons options, Warlocks can have tons of customization and variety. D&D has many great features. There is no best option. You can choose the one that you love the most. Remember that the Pact of Chain and the Pact of the Tome allow you to stay out of the fight while using Cantrips or other ranged options to help. Pact of the Blade lets you fight in any way you like. However, just because it’s called Pact of the Blade doesn’t mean that your Pact weapon cannot be a bow.

Each Patron option will have an impact on how you play your character. Your character will be affected by the different goals of a Fiend and an Archfey. Each Patron offers a more extensive spell list and other benefits to those who serve them.

Warlock Stats

Statistics in D&D show how your character interacts and what they can do. Your DM will ensure that your statistics are consistent with the rest of the group. No matter your chosen method, you will get six numbers, one for each attribute. To get the most from your statistics, prioritize them.

Charisma is the primary spell casting ability of Warlocks, who are magic casters who use Charisma. Charisma should be your highest attribute. Charisma is your primary attribute. It buffs all of your instrumental Charisma skills automatically (like Persuasion). Choose either the Pact of the Chain or the Pact of the Tome. Constitution should be your next most powerful ability, as you will spend most of your time sending Cantrips. You can choose Strength or Dexterity for Pact of the Blade, depending on the weapon you intend to use.

The statistic breakdowns should look like this:

Charisma | Constitution | Dexterity | Wisdom | Strength | Intelligence

You should use pact of the blade if you want it to look like this:

Charisma: Strength/Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence.

Choose Dexterity for your second-place attribute. You can bump Wisdom to gain Insight, Perception, and Strength bonuses.

Warlock Spells

Warlocks have fewer spell slots than all other dedicated magic classes, making them more challenging. They must rely on their Cantrips and, later, their Eldritch invocations. Warlocks have 2 Cantrips and 2 spells at the beginning level. Select Cantrips are not able to be replaced later, unlike attacks. Make sure you’re happy with the ones that you have chosen.

Eldritch Blast is the first Cantrip that every Warlock should take. This is an excellent Cantrip that has a vast range and has high damage dice. Another reason why this spell is essential is the three Eldritch invocations. Warlocks can use to improve Eldritch Blast. These Invocations can increase this Cantrip, so even if you don’t plan on running Pact of the Blade, Eldritch Blast is an excellent option. Ask your Barbarian friend. Sometimes you can’t reach what you want to stab. This is why Eldritch Blast is such a great backup. Friends are my recommendation, as Warlocks are Charisma-based casters. You can make a difference in a Persuasion attempt’s success by getting an advantage. Although the target may know that you used magic on it, you are the one who makes Pacts and deals with powerful entities. Future planning is far from your strong suit.

Your Patron’s expanded spell lists will not be considered for this article. You can trade any of these options with your Patron. You should search for spells with more prolonged effects or durations, as Warlocks only have two spell slots. There are better ideas than using one of your spell slots to create a one-off impact. Hex is the first spell that every Warlock should know. This spell lasts one hour and deals additional damage to the target whenever they attack you. It only costs a bonus action to cast. You can use it to hex an ability that imposes disadvantages on someone every time they make an Ability check (using the hexed capability). If the target ever has 0 hit points, curse it to curse a new creature. It can be cast early in combat and Hex any creature you fight.

Arms of Hadar is the next spell that you should get. Arms of Hadar is a multi-action spell that can end Hex spells sooner than Witch Bolt. However, it doesn’t require concentration. Because you can Hex a creature’s Strength before casting it, this spell works well with Hex. This spell has the added benefit of being an area-of-effect spell that affects all creatures within 10 feet of your location (including allies). They still suffer damage even if they make the save.
